Science Assignment: Fungi

*What are fungi?
In all kinds of shapes, different colors, types, you can see it all around the world. Fungi are eukaryotic and heterotrophic organisms.
*Cell structure—Fungi range in size from tiny unicellular yeast to large multicellular fungi. The cells of all fungi are surrounded by cell walls. Except for the simplest fungi, such as unicellular yeast, the cells of most fungi are arranged in structures called hyphae.
*Obtaining food—Although fungi are heterotrophs, they do not take food into their bodies as you do. Instead, fungi absorb food through hyphae that grow into the food source.
*Reproduction—
Fungi usually reproduce by making spores. The lightweight spores are surrounded by a protective covering and can be carried easily through air or water to new sites.

Fungi produce spores in reproductive structures called fruiting bodies.

Asexual Reproduction—most fungi reproduce bother asexually and sexually. Where there is adequate moisture and food, the fungi make spores asexually.

Unicellular yeast cells undergo a form of asexual reproduction called budding.

Sexual Reproduction—most fungi can also reproduce sexually, especially when growing conditions become unfavorable. In sexual reproduction, the hyphae of two fungi grow together and genetic material is exchanged.
*Major types—there are four major groups of fungi.
1.Phycomycetes
2.Ascomycetes
3.Basidiomycetes
4.Deuteromycetes
